Who doesn’t love a cozy fall evening?

The warmer months have their benefits, but nothing beats curling up in a warm, fuzzy blanket and sipping a cup of hot cocoa with a book before bed.

Not only can a cozy fall night routine help you feel comfortable in the midst of darker days, but it can also improve your overall health when the weather becomes harsher.

A fall night routine filled with healthy and rejuvenating activities will help to keep you healthier longer in the colder months.

If you want some ideas on how to make the most of this chilly season, then read on for some suggestions!

13 Things to add to your evening for a cozy fall night routine

1. Make Your Space Tidy

When you finish work for the day, one clear way to tell your brain that it’s time to relax is to change your environment.

A great way to do this is to do a quick sweep of your home.

Finish up any leftover dirty dishes, put away any random items, and make sure that your home feels clean. It will help you relax when the time comes.

2. Write Tomorrow’s To-Do List

Another way to help your brain wind down is to think about the things you want to be done and to record them somewhere, kind of like a mini brain dump.

This will help you get everything off your chest and will ensure that it will be remembered for tomorrow.

When your to-do list ideas are all written down, your brain won’t have to ruminate on those thoughts, because you will know that those ideas are saved and will be returned to tomorrow.

It will give you a better chance to simply relax for the rest of the night.

3. Steam Your Face (for 10 minutes once a week)

Though some might say otherwise, you don’t need to break the bank to steam your face at home. All you need is a pot or bowl to hold some boiling water and a blanket to put over your head.

Fill the bowl with boiling water, then hold your face over the steam for 10-15 minutes with a towel over your head to contain the steam.

It will relax you, open your pores for purification of the skin, and clear out any bad stuff in your lungs.

I would highly recommend this step be taken once a week for people with asthma or dry coughs. It is so healing!

4. Take a Warm Bath

A relaxing bath will help you slow down the rest of your body and get ready to relax for the evening.

Dim the lights, maybe light a candle or two and settle into the warmth of the water. It is best that you do this step an hour before bed to help you sleep better.

For some extra comfort, make use of soaps and creams that smell like fall to really get you in the mood for a comfy, cozy fall night.

5. Moisturize Your Hands and Feet

Once you hop out of the bath and your skin is warm and soft, make sure you pay special attention to your hands and feet.

Moisturize them with a moisturizer of your choice or with some oil you have in the kitchen (sesame oil is best for fall because of its warming qualities).

While you’re adding some moisture, take some time to give a little extra love with a massage for your hands and feet.

Not only will it make you feel relaxed, but massaging your extremities actually helps with a bunch of health needs, such as improving sleep, relieving body pain, and improving your mood.

This video is a really comprehensive massage for your feet that anyone can do! I don’t know what it is about these two chiropractors, but their videos make me giggle! They don’t bother with any of typical Youtube aesthetics, but the information they’ve got is great!

And here’s a great video for hand massage! I like that this one has a filming perspective that is easy to follow.

6. Put Oil in Your Nostrils

This won’t necessarily make you feel cozy, but it is good to add to any fall nighttime self-care routine.

Get a little bit of oil (sesame oil is ideal), and put it on the inside of your nose.

It will help with any potential itchiness, pain, or irritation that your nose might get from the cold, dry weather.

7. Crack Out the Cozy Textiles

One of the best things about fall is that it’s finally cold enough to start piling on the sweaters and blankets.

Once you finish bathing, get changed into your coziest pjs and slide your freshly-moisturized feet into some soft slippers.

When you’re ready to settle into a comfortable seat, grab some pillows and a fuzzy throw to keep you warm and comfy.

8. Play Some Autumn Tunes

Once you’ve got your cozy clothes, it’s time to start creating a scene of comfort for your autumn bedtime routine.

I like to play instrumental songs to create a bit of an atmospheric background that won’t distract me while I read or focus on other things.

My favourite place to get fall music is Spotify and Youtube

On Spotify, look for these playlists:

  • Sweater weather instrumentals
  • Cozy Acoustic Morning
  • Autumn Piano
  • Your Favorite Coffeehouse (this one is not instrumental)

On Youtube, I like to use the BGM channel for instrumental music, and the alexrainbird music channel for indie songs with vocals.

All of these playlists will be sure to put you in an autumn mood!

9. Light Some Candles

For your Autumn bedtime routine, don’t forget to include some candles and soft lighting.

The warm glow of the candles will push all of the chills out of your home, and the smell will help to get you feeling comforted in no time!

For some extra fall coziness, choose candles that smell like a campfire or like apples or pumpkin.

10. Make a Warm Fall Drink

Don’t worry, we’re almost at the part where you just sit back and relax, but we have to give you something warm, spiced, and sweet to relax with!

There are loads of good recipes out there for you to try, but here are some of my favourites:

11. Read a Book

Who wasn’t expecting that one? Books have their own merit in every season.

In the fall, they really add to the ambiance.

You can pick any book, but if you really want to get drawn into the season, it might be fun to go for a spooky story or a thriller.

12. Do Some Bedtime Yoga

Once you start getting a little sleepier and you’ve finished your warm drink, it’s time to start getting your body ready for sleep.

Try a bedtime yoga sequence or do some yin yoga to help you fall asleep faster.

13. Add a Lavender Scent to Your Bedroom

Finally, before you slip under the covers for sleep, put a little lavender on your pillow, or diffuse some lavender oil in your bedroom.

Lavender is good for any season to help you relax and fall asleep faster. It’s the perfect addition to any nighttime self-care routine!

What an awesome post! Just what I was looking for! I hadn’t considered doing nighttime yoga, and it definitely sounds like something I could use to sleep better! I’ll add it to my own routine for sure!

Tip: Right after taking a bath, I’d also add a face massage! It is super soothing, and I feel it helps me relax my face muscles! I have a jade face roller I bought on Amazon, and I love it!

Haha, yes, loud background noise and children who constantly require your attention are not exactly conducive to a relaxing night, are they? I hope that you will be able to have some well-deserved time to yourself soon! Thanks for the comment 🙂

Yes, I feel like personal care is even more important in the colder months because of how the cold and lack of sun can affect our overall health. Thank you for the comment! 🙂
