For four years, I lived in places that don’t celebrate Thanksgiving.

In Canada and the United States, Thanksgiving is a huge family holiday full of delicious food, cozy atmospheres, and family time.

While teaching abroad, it was a holiday that was dearly missed by teachers who came from either of these countries.

We all missed it so much that we determined to make our own celebration. We would go in search of turkey, stuffing, and cranberry sauce, and we would spend the night celebrating things we were thankful for.

Besides the food, the thing we always took very seriously was the decoration. As much as I don’t like to advocate owning unnecessary things because I strive for a minimalist lifestyle, I am a big fan of seasonal decorations.

I feel that they help us to live in the moment and make the most of every season and event. And for that reason, you will likely see me suggesting lots of seasonal decoration ideas in the future.

Today, I want to share with you some simple, inexpensive materials that you can buy for your Thanksgiving table setting this year. All of these dollar store items are budget-friendly and easy to find. With these simple items, you can instantly transform your table into a Thanksgiving scene!

Affordable Thanksgiving Decoration #1: Burlap

I have always been a fan of burlap. I will buy it in any form. It’s good for table settings, wrapping around items, centrepieces, and (as a teacher) bulletin boards.

Burlap is an inexpensive, reusable and flexible item to own for any season. But it is especially nice for Thanksgiving because it fits the harvest vibe quite nicely. The dollar store usually sells burlap in big sheets or in smaller strips, but you can often find burlap in sticker form, as well!

Here are some great ways to use burlap for your Thanksgiving table setting:

Affordable Thanksgiving Decoration #2: Fall Nature (real or fake)

If you live in a place that has leaves that change colour in the fall, you will understand just how pleasing and comforting it can be!

One way to add comfort to your Thanksgiving celebrations is to mimic fall nature.

If you really want to save money this year, then simply go outside! Nature can easily give you the most affordable Thanksgiving decorations possible! Here are some things you can take a look for while you’re hunting for potential Thanksgiving decor:

  • Sticks
  • Colourful Leaves
  • Acorns
  • Pine Cones
  • Hay
  • Flowers
  • Wheat
  • Corn
  • Your groceries (Squash, pumpkins, apples, cinnamon sticks, etc.)

If nature is not your thing, you can also get plastic versions of these items at your local dollar store around this time of the year. Either way, this decoration is nice because it is a visual reminder of the simple pleasures fall brings!

Affordable Thanksgiving Decoration #3: Mason Jars

What can’t you use mason jars for? I’ve never owned a mason jar that hasn’t proven useful, and Thanksgiving is no exception!

If you’re looking for affordable Thanksgiving decorations, this tip can certainly help you!

Mason jars can be used as cozy cups, or you can use them as vases to hold the flowers and sticks you found outside. You can even make them into a unique centrepiece if you fill them with lights or wrap them in burlap.

Here are some possible ideas for inspiration:

Affordable Thanksgiving Decoration #4: Fairy Lights or Tea Lights

Depending on whether you prefer electricity or open flame, both of these items are great for a Thanksgiving table setting.

You can leave them loose around the table, or you can put them inside mason jars for a softer glow. They are both great purchases that will offer lots of uses outside of Thanksgiving decor, as well!

Affordable Thanksgiving Decoration #5: Twine or rope

Much like the burlap, this is another great affordable Thanksgiving decoration that can serve many purposes!  Here are some ideas to get you started:

An extra bonus: Printed Quotes

If you have a printer available to you, then this last suggestion is another great budget option for Thanksgiving decor.

Find an artistic quote about thankfulness or gratitude that makes you happy and print them for your table! Not only will it look nice, but it will remind you of what is truly important about the season.

Conclusion

If you are on a tight budget this year but you still want to make your home cozy for Thanksgiving, you will have no trouble decorating with only these items.

Go to your local dollar store for these items, then get creative decorating with them. The really nice thing about these decorations is that they can be reused for different things next year. Your table will never have to look the same!
