Summer can be a wonderful time of the year!

Long walks at sunset, trips to the beach, ice cream shops opening up… who doesn’t love it?

But there are some things that get a little, well, tedious.

Especially when the weather starts to get hot. It is so easy to want to just sit back and do NOTHING when the heat starts piling on.

But some things just can’t be ignored. Our skin is one of those things. Despite the nice weather, our skin still needs a lot of care.

But don’t worry!

I’ve got some summer skincare tips to help you have an easier time with your summer skincare routine. With these daily rituals, you’ll have no trouble keeping your skin glowing throughout the summer.

Summer Skincare Rituals for Glowing Skin

"11 Simple skincare rituals to help you take care of your skin in the summer.

Tip #1: Exfoliate!

I’m sure you hear this one all the time, but this skincare ritual is quite important, especially in the summer months.

Exfoliating your skin exposes fresh new skin that needs moisture that would otherwise be blocked by dead skin. This is really important in the summer because it is the time of year when your body needs the most moisture and protection.

This is obviously going to take up some extra time, but this task has such a self-care vibe to it that it feels more like relaxation than work.

Plus, with a few tricks, it won’t cost you much at all!

I want to share a few affordable ways that you can take care of your skin naturally.

Use an old toothbrush to exfoliate small areas of skin.

I rarely toss old toothbrushes. If they’re not re-purposed for cleaning, then they get used for skincare instead.

The bristles of an old toothbrush make for a perfect natural exfoliator. For the same reason that it won’t scrape or hurt your teeth when you brush them, it will be a gentle exfoliant for your skin.

You can use it in any small areas that need exfoliating. One way you could use it is by “brushing” your lips once a day to keep them smooth. Another way is to brush the skin around your nails to keep any hangnails from forming.

Don’t spend extra money on fancy products. A toothbrush works just as well and makes use of something that would otherwise be tossed.

Take care of your feet with a pumice stone.

This tip does require a purchase, but it is not expensive by any means.

Besides getting the product, the process is easy. Soak your feet and then scrub away!

And here’s another quick tip: a great way to help your feet AND help your mental health is to walk around barefoot when you’re outside!

For your body, you can exfoliate wet or dry.

The first method you can use is the typical style of exfoliating, which would take place in the shower or bath.

Instead of buying something to exfoliate with, I use my leftover coffee grounds from that day. Just take a little bit of coconut oil, add it to your coffee grounds, and voila! You have your very own exfoliator.

It is especially nice in the morning or whenever you need a little extra energy. The coffee grounds smell so good!

Fair warning, though, they do require a little bit of cleanup afterwards, since coffee doesn’t disintegrate into the water. Just make sure you’ve washed it all away when you’re done.

The second method of exfoliating comes from an ayurvedic ritual. It’s called “dry brushing”. It involves scrubbing your whole body in the direction towards your heart. It’s a great way to wake up your body, and it’s easy to do without any prep. I prefer a circular brush so that it’s easier to maneuver, but choose according to your own personal preferences!

Exfoliate with something softer for your face

It might sound silly to endorse a simple baking ingredient, but I swear by baking soda to exfoliate my face. It is gritty, but still really soft to use. It’s the perfect thing for such a sensitive area.

I just mix in a little lemon juice and baking soda and leave that on my face for ten minutes. Then, instead of just rinsing it off, I get some water and move the dried baking soda around my face in soft, circular motions until it dissolves.

My skin feels so good afterwards! Just make sure you don’t SCRUB; a soft movement will work just as well!

(Extra precaution: because this exfoliant involves ingredients that are sometimes harsh on the skin, make sure you test this on a small area of skin before putting it on your face).

Tip #2: Moisturize

Like I said before, summer makes the skin pretty desperate for moisture.

For this reason, my next summer skincare tip for glowing skin is to make sure that your skin is moisturized.

For this step, I only ever use one ingredient, and it’s one that you might find in your kitchen: Coconut Oil.

Honestly, I use it so much for both cooking and body care that I would recommend saving your money and getting a massive tub of it instead of the little guys (which I do still buy on occasion because I like to re-use the pretty jars they come in).

Tip #3: Spot Treat Blemishes with Tea Tree Oil

Due to the humidity and heat, even the best efforts can’t keep away all of the blemishes. When they do arrive, this is a quick and easy skincare ritual that will help.

Just mix some of the Tea Tree Oil with coconut oil (water works, too) and put a tiny dab of it directly on the blemish. Use a q-tip to help you be more precise. Don’t put it anywhere else on the skin, as it has drying properties.

It’s no magic, overnight solution, but I’ve found it to be the most effective treatment I’ve ever used.

Tip#4: Wear Sunscreen

I’m sure you’ve heard this one many times before, but it is just as true now. Sun protection is important at any age. If you want to take care of your skin in the summer, you have to make sure you are protecting it from the sun.

If you really hate sunscreen, or have skin sensitivities to it, there are solutions.Other options include wearing hats or wearing clothing that offer coverage.

One strategy that I saw all the time while I was living in China was to carry around an umbrella to shield you from the sun. That works, too!

There are lots of good brands out there now that offer a nice smell to it or make sure that it won’t be sticky when you put it on, so take the time to look around and find what your best fit will be.

I change my sunscreens a lot based on my needs. For example, if I want something to wear every day, I consider the smell the most. However, if I’m going to be at the beach and I just want something that will last, I pick a different brand.

Just take a look around and test out what’s right for you!

Tip #5: Wear Minimal Makeup

Fall and Winter are great times to play with makeup and add some colour, but summer is such a good opportunity to give your skin a break.

As someone who has struggled with acne all through high school and university, I am a HUGE advocate for leaving the foundation behind at all seasons. Through all of the things that I tried in order to help my skin, getting rid of foundation was one of the best things I ever did!

But especially in the summer, when your skin is already sticky and hot, it is an even better reason to stop using foundation.

Instead, I’d recommend a tinted moisturizer.

It adds a bit of the colour you’re wanting for your skin, but its main purpose is to protect and nourish your face.

Besides that, you can clean yourself up a little more with a touch of concealer, some waterproof mascara, and an SPF lip balm.

And you’re done!

With this quick and easy makeup routine, you allow your skin to breathe AND prepare yourself for days in the sun and the water.

Tip #6: Have a Nail Care Kit Handy

I don’t know about you, but I find that my nails need a lot of extra care in the summer. The nail itself grows faster, and I am more prone to dry cuticles and hangnails.

For this reason, I try to keep a nail care kit readily available. Whenever I see something that needs tending, I get on it right away!

Try to keep your nail care in an accessible place so that you can get it easily the moment you are thinking about it. It will save you from having to patch up problems later on.

Keep a close eye on your toes, too, since they will be visible in those sandals and open-toe shoes!

With any extra time you have, choose a nail polish to add to your look if you’d like. If you want to appear more tan, choose a bright nail colour. Alternatively, if you just want to look more polished, choose a soft pastel pink. My go-to in the summertime is always the pastels!

Tip #7: Got Allergies? Use a Honey Mask

Spring and summer bring a lot of allergens with them, and for those of you with sensitive skin, it can be a nightmare to take care of your skin in the summer!

I struggle with this myself and wanted to share a bit of a strange summer skincare tip that worked like a charm for me! Now, I don’t have any scientific basis for why this works, but I want to recommend it anyways…

Whenever I get a rash or start to develop itchy skin, I just put some honey all over my face.

Yep, that’s it!

Honey face masks are already pretty common for other things, but I’m not mixing it with anything this time. It’s JUST the honey.

Now, I do know that honey is known to have antibacterial properties, and it does help to calm skin, so I’m assuming that is why it makes my skin feel a little better right away.

But honestly, there’s a different reason why I love doing this so much.

When my skin is itchy, all I want to do is scratch it.

BUT with sticky honey soothing your face, it is also REALLY HARD TO SCRATCH AT ANYTHING.

Wherever you touch leaves you sticky and messy. So I disregard any timers and just leave the honey on for as long as it takes for me to stop wanting to scratch the itch.

It might seem a bit strange, but seriously, it works like a charm!

Tip #9: Drink lots of water

This is probably another obvious one, but I heard this advice without following it for 24 YEARS and am only now realizing how big of a difference water makes for my skin.

I started drinking the proper amount of water last year, and I immediately noticed the difference.

My skin was no longer looked ashy. Instead, I had glowing skin that looked healthy and bright. My under-eye circles got lighter, and I had fewer breakouts throughout the week.

To keep up with your intake, try having a full 24 oz. bottle right when you wake up. This skincare ritual will wake you up faster AND you’ll already have a ton of water in your system before you’ve even gotten out of bed!

Tip #10: Get enough sleep

This is kind of my go-to solution for a lot of health-related things. Along with getting enough water, sleep is something that is vital for your body to function properly.

Though no one seems to know why sleep is so good for you, it’s definitely important for your overall health and well-being. It can certainly help your skin feel more fresh and supple!

Everyone feels good with different amounts of sleep, so whatever amount of sleep makes you feel best is the right option.

Just make sure that it’s consistent.

If you only ever need six hours of sleep, make sure you’re meeting that quota every night. If you need nine hours, the same rule applies.

Tip #11: Change out of your Damp Swimsuit

Men and women alike have to be wary of this one, but it’s a much bigger problem for women.

When possible, try to change out of wet bathing suits sooner rather than later. Obviously, at a beach day, this is not quite as feasible, but when it’s an option, it is highly recommended.

Damp suits are a breeding ground for bacteria, so if you don’t want to end up with a yeast infection or an uncomfortable rash, try to make sure that your skin isn’t sitting in a damp suit for too long.

It is also important to wash your suits before wearing them out again. If you can’t do that, at least try to wait until it’s dry before putting it on again. Your skin will thank you!
