I’ll be honest- as a kid, Halloween was far from being my favourite holiday.
I enjoyed dressing up in fun costumes, but I never liked the other Halloween activities. It wasn’t nice to see the scary costumes that other kids dressed up in. The cold was abhorrent to me, and I never liked to walk from house to house shivering. It did not seem at all appealing to me to walk to stranger’s houses and demand candy from them. And to top it all off, I was not a kid that appreciated missing her bedtime.
I much preferred to stay home.
As I grew older, that’s exactly what I did.
Now, I enjoy using Halloween as an excuse to dress up in fun costumes and spend time with friends and family, but I very much prefer to remain in the comfort of my own home.
There are so many fun Halloween activities you can do at home that don’t require a lot of preparation, and they are all things you can do while social distancing.
I want to give you twenty indoor ideas for Halloween that you can do this year (and any year after) to have some good Halloween fun at home or on a budget!

1. Watch Halloween Movies
There are so many fun movies out there for Halloween! If you’re the type that likes to be spooked, you can have a horror movie marathon. For those of you who can’t deal with scary movies, you can take advantage of the fun Halloween movies that Disney has made over the years (Hocus Pocus is an obvious choice). Finally, if you’re feeling like throwing on a musical, you can have some serious fun with The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
2. Watch Halloween Specials
Almost every cartoon, sitcom, and drama has some sort of Halloween special to enjoy, and it’s easy to watch any of them out of context. Here are some ideas for shows that have some great Halloween specials:
- Disney channel tv shows
- Charlie Brown
- Pretty Little Liars
- American Horror Story (especially the hotel season)
- How I Met Your Mother
- The Office
- New Girl
- Brooklyn 99
- Friends
- Modern Family
3. Make a Halloween Playlist
I don’t know if anyone else likes to do this, but when holidays and events come around, I love to create a sort of ‘mood board’ with songs. If you enjoy creating atmospheres with music playlists, then this activity is for you!
4. Learn Halloween Dances
Some of the Halloween dances out there a super fun and easy to learn (Michael Jackson’s Thriller, anyone?), and they are a blast to learn with friends!
5. Make themed desserts
Have fun creating a great themed dessert with a loved one. The shared experience is a lot of fun, and you have something delicious to enjoy afterwards! Here are five recipes you can try for yourself!
- Cheesecake Stuffed Halloween Cupcakes
- Halloween Oreo Brownie Bars
- Pumpkin Bread Truffles
- Coffin-Shaped Homemade Pop-Tarts
- Candy-Filled Pumpkin Pail Cake
6. Do Pumpkin carving or pumpkin painting
It’s been trendy this year to do pumpkin painting, so why not give it a go? Try out a fun design, or make a simple face for your pumpkin. And if you like the traditional Halloween style, carve your pumpkin, instead. Don’t forget to roast all those delicious pumpkin seeds, as well!
7. Decorate the front of your house or your front door
Whether you prefer cute, happy pumpkins or spooky gravestones, you can decorate your front door so that people have something fun to look at when they go for a walk. Your decorations just might brighten up someone’s day!
8. Make a Halloween blanket fort
Who doesn’t love a good blanket fort?
Honestly, you are never too old to make one. Grab all the blankets you have and make the coziest blanket fort you can. Then take as many candies and sweets as you’d like and eat them while you’re huddled inside your new hideout!
9. Dress Up
Who cares if you’re not going out? Costumes are fun because you get to dress up and imagine you are someone else for the night. Even if you are just staying at home, dress up in something fun and enjoy the silliness!
10. Rent or buy a chocolate fountain or plan a chocolate fondue
Believe it or not, you can buy a great chocolate fountain at a very reasonable price. Most are under $100.
If you see yourself using it annually, it might be worth it to buy one.
However, if you don’t want to own one for yourself, you can just as easily rent it.
And if a simple fondue is more your style, that’s a great option, too! Get lots of fruits and treats to dip into the chocolate and forget the candy! Enjoy this sweet treat instead, and you won’t be missing anything!
11. Do an indoor candy scavenger hunt
Take turns hiding candy throughout your home and getting the others to try to find it.
If you want to really go with the Halloween theme, make your own indoor haunted house and have everyone find as much candy as they can without getting spooked! If the preparation doesn’t appeal to you, just have the scavenger hunt in the dark.
12. Read a Halloween book
J.K. Rowling and Roald Dahl are two great children’s authors that make some fun Halloween-type stories! If you are looking for something a bit more seriously spooky, you can never go wrong with Stephen King!
Read it out loud with someone else and it’ll feel like telling ghost stories!
13. Make a haunted gingerbread house
Take a Christmas tradition and try it for Halloween! Design your own haunted house with candy and icing.
14. Go for a night walk to see the Halloween decorations
Depending on how involved your neighbourhood likes to get, you might be able to see some cool houses that are decorated for fall, Halloween, or Thanksgiving.
15. Make themed drinks
Every season comes with some fun themed drinks! Make some of your own and enjoy them with some yummy snacks! Here are some ideas:
- Witches brew
- Halloween Punch (non-alcoholic and fun for kids)
- Poison Apple Cocktail
- Candy Corn Cocktail
- Candy Corn Hot Chocolate (another good one for kids!)
16. Boo a Neighbour
This has been a trend this year, and I absolutely love it! All you have to do is make a sweet little Halloween package with whatever you think your neighbours might like, and then you deliver it to them. It’s safe, sanitary, and a great way to spread the love! This could be a nice way to use some of your tithe money this month.
17. Do a Halloween Craft
Crafts are always a fun thing to do in groups! You can maybe even use those crafts to decorate your house! Here are some Halloween activities you can try yourself:
18. Do a costume dinner
Instead of everyone dressing up in their own individual costumes, have a themed dinner where everyone will dress up based on that theme.
You could choose a particular decade that you want to re-enact, or you could think of a movie you all like, where everyone will come dressed up as a different character from that movie. Get creative! And have fun making the table and food match the theme, as well.
19. Have a murder mystery or DIY Escape room (only if there are enough people within your household)
This one will not be possible if you are only living with one or two people, but if there are enough people in your household, you could have a murder mystery party or make your own escape room for people to play!
20. Have a candy apple bar
Cut up some delicious apples, get a bowl of caramel and an array of toppings, and you’re set! It’s simple and fun to do!
Conclusion
Those are twenty fun Halloween activities you can do at home this year to have a blast at Halloween without even leaving your home! You can mix-and-match to create a night that is full of fun and silliness. I hope that some of these activities sparked some inspiration and that you have a fantastic Halloween this year!
