Get 10 simple and inexpensive bedroom decor ideas that I use in my own room!
Welcome to the series ‘Something for the Season’, where you will find a quick list of recommended books, beats, podcasts, and products for your weekend! This week’s episode is all about how to take a simple approach to bedroom decor. I’ve got ten ideas on how you can use the stuff you probably already own to create a clean and comfortable bedroom.
When my husband and I moved back to Canada, we didn’t start with much.
And we’ve been intentionally trying to accumulate stuff slowly so that we can determine what holds real value for us.
Over this past year, we have been slowly receiving furniture and decorative pieces that have been donated by friends and family. Whatever they don’t want comes to us before it ends up at the dump or in the thrift store.
Some areas of the house are still a work in progress, but the bedroom is one of the rooms in the house that feels finished.
It’s not decked out with a ton of decorations but it is clean and simple and has been a lovely, calm space to sleep every night.
For today’s episode of Something for the Season, I want to share some tips on my top 10 bedroom decor ideas that you can try in your home to make it simple, relaxing, and insanely easy to keep clean!
Top 10 Bedroom Decor Ideas to Try at Home!
Idea #1: Keep the bed simple
I like to use a bedroom strictly for sleeping, so everything that goes into the bedroom decor needs to support this ideal. For this reason, I believe it’s better to make the bed the main attraction in your bedroom and to decorate it practically. This means making sure it is comfortable to sleep in rather than pretty to look at.

Idea #2: Decorate with a serving tray
The other activity that can be really special in a bedroom is breakfast in bed. For this reason alone, I like to keep a tray in the bedroom that can be used for this purpose. It looks really pretty but it also has a useful purpose.
This is a cute country-style serving tray that you could use!
Idea #3: Keep a trunk for bedsheet storage
Storing winter blankets and extra linen can take up a lot of space but when you put it in an elegant trunk, it doesn’t feel cluttered at all. I find the trunk makes the whole room feel a little nicer, too!
Idea #4: Have a full-sized mirror in the corner of the room
Like I said before, every piece of bedroom decor should ideally have a functional purpose (even if that purpose is just to make you smile). A full-sized mirror is handy in the morning to check how your outfit looks when you’re ready to get your day started. Mirrors are also really useful to help make a space look bigger and to let in more light!

Idea #5: Use a light alarm instead of a sound alarm
I’m not a huge fan of noisy alarms. They immediately put me in a bad mood by jolting me awake each day. Instead, I’d recommend using a light alarm to wake you up. The light wakes you up slowly and naturally so that it doesn’t interrupt any REM sleep. Additionally, you can turn off the time display so that there are no annoying lights in your room while you sleep!

Idea #6: Keep flowers (fake or real) on your bedside table
Really, keep any sort of nature on your bedside table. It never hurts to add a little bit of the outdoors into each space and it really doesn’t cost much. If you didn’t want to spend anything at all, you could simply go outside and fill a glass bowl with natural pieces you find out there. A display of pine cones or twigs would look beautiful!

Idea #7: Use elegant curtains instead of a door for your closet
Instead of spending a ton of money on installing doors for the closet, we decided to get a rod from the dollar store and hang a lace curtain on it. It kept the room feeling spacious and breezy while still hiding away all of the clothes from the closet.
I just used old curtains I had from university, but I really liked the elegance of these European-style curtains:
Idea #8: Put memorabilia in your closet
I’ll admit, we were quite blessed to have a walk-in closet in our bedroom so we had extra space in there that wasn’t needed for clothes. One of my favourite things we’ve done with the spacious closet is to use it for more than clothes.
Instead of filling every space with clothing, we used some shelves to display memorabilia.
Here is the memorabilia we displayed to give you ideas:
- A collection of pins from around the world
- Our wedding vows and wedding photos
- A shadowbox of wedding memorabilia
- A piece of coral from the ocean
- A statement hat
- Books
- Pretty perfume packaging
Idea #9: Get a display for jewelry
Jewelry is one of the worst things to have around if you have no way to store it but it has some great potential to add to the aesthetics of the space with a proper container. I personally prefer containers that hide the jewelry but many people enjoy displaying it a little more intentionally.
I couldn’t decide on which jewelry box organizer I liked best, so I’m sharing all three with you!

Idea #10: Consider all the senses
My last bedroom decor idea is all about recognizing that a nice space doesn’t just appeal to your sight, but to your other senses, too:
- Smell: Decorate with perfume, candles, flowers, or diffusers to make the space smell pleasing
- Touch: Add natural materials that have texture to them and choose blankets and curtains that you enjoy feeling
- Sound: A quiet, calm bedroom is ideal for sleep. Make sure there are no items in the room that create ‘annoying’ sounds, if you can help it
