Is making your bed every morning a chore or an enjoyable experience?

Being 27 years old, I have made my fair share of beds over the years.

It had never really been something that I enjoyed. In fact, some days I dreaded it. My beds were always so high up and against walls which made it difficult to clean effectively.

When I met my husband, I remember him complaining about making his bed, too. He kept talking about how annoying it was to add on a bunch of pillows that served no purpose other than to be decorative every day, and he definitely had a point.

When we got married and had to decide on decorations for our own house, we decided not to follow the trends and opt for simple decor.

On our bed, we only decorate with the items we actually make use of when we sleep. That means two pillows, one heavy blanket, and one fitted blanket. That’s all.

At first, I thought I would dislike how bare it was, but I was so wrong.

Not only do I love the minimal aesthetic it has, but I love how easy it is for me to make the bed every morning and maintain cleanliness.

After changing the way I decorate my bed, I have grown to truly enjoy making my bed each day.

The routine requires very little effort and doesn’t waste any time on things I only use for decoration.

If you want to learn how to make your bed in a way that will maintain cleanliness without wasting all your time, then check out my simple bed-making routine!

The benefits of making your bed in a more simplistic way

I shouldn’t go any further without telling you exactly how this style of making your bed will benefit you.

This approach is a no-frills, no-flair approach.

It’s just clean lines and the bare necessities.

You choose the pillows and blankets you want wisely, and you don’t buy anything that is only meant for decoration.

Here are the many reasons why this style of bed design can benefit you:

  • Your bed will always look neat and put-together
  • The design you use is not going to need to change with the changing trends
  • It’s cheaper because you don’t have to buy a bunch of extra accessories
  • The blanket doesn’t cover the mattress or pillows, so everything is way more breathable and hygienic
  • Your bed is easier to clean and can be cleaned more thoroughly every day
  • The effort you are putting in is on the stuff that matters, not the stuff you never use

There are so many reasons why choosing to make your bed this way can benefit you! Let’s take a look at how to actually do it now.

How to make your bed like a minimalist in five easy steps

A clean bed.

Step 1: Take everything off the bed and let it breathe for twenty minutes

This habit lets your bed air out a little before you make it.

This ensures that you don’t trap any moisture that developed from lying there all night. It helps keep dust mites from showing up and just generally keeps your bed cleaner.

I mean, I’ve never really worried about dust mites before. Buuuut it’s kind of nice to know you’re taking good care of your bed.

Simply open up your sheets so that the underside gets a chance to air out, as well as the mattress itself, then move on to the next step.

Step 2: Tighten up the fitted sheet

I remember when I made my bed as a kid, I used to put the smallest amount of effort possible into my bed.

Every morning, I would kind of just lightly lay my comforter on top of all of my crumpled bedsheets. Then I’d walk away and pretend like the whole thing was that neat.

I mean, you can only see the top layer, so that was the only one I bothered to tidy!

With this minimalist method of making your bed, the fitted sheet is exposed. Because of this, you are forced to pay attention to how clean it really is.

This step is for you to shake out any of the wrinkles that you created overnight and to check for any stains that are going to need to be washed.

Step 3: Use a lint roller on the fitted sheet

I don’t have pets, so I don’t need to do this step every day, but about every three days I like to use a lint roller on the fitted sheet to collect any hair or pieces of fluff that accumulate there over time.

I find this part of the routine very meditative and satisfying. It’s a small action that makes you feel so good when you crawl into your clean bed at night.

If you have any scented sprays you like, then this would be a good time to use it, as well.

Step 4: Fold your sheets and place them at the edge of your bed

Whenever I made my bed in the past, I had layers of sheets to keep me warm. It wasn’t until my husband suggested switching to one single sheet that I even considered changing that habit.

Maybe you’ve got a good reason for me, but I actually can’t think of a valid reason why we have more than one blanket on our bed.

In fact, I’ve only seen reasons that using one sheet is better for you.

In the hotter weather, we use one thin sheet and in the colder weather, we use one thick blanket.

You don’t end up all tangled in a bunch of sheets every night, you don’t overheat, and you only have one blanket to tidy in the morning.

It’s actually a really pleasant system!

By folding the sheet, it makes it clear to others that your bed has been cleaned and it also keeps your mattress and pillows breathing fresh air all day (which feels really good when you go to sleep)!

Fair warning: if you are not a fan of the minimalist aesthetic, then you definitely won’t be a fan of this style, but I find the clean design extremely pleasing.

Step 5: Return any other accessories you use to sleep back to your bed

This step will look different depending on what you need when you are sleeping, but basically, you only decorate with the items you use when sleeping.

If you don’t use pillows, don’t put pillows on your bed just because you feel like that’s what people want you to do.

For me, this involves one silk pillow and my teddy bear, but some people need more than that.

Decorate with what you actually use and your bed will be both beautiful and useful!

Part of living authentically involves getting rid of the things that don’t serve a purpose so that you can make room for the things that you actually value.

When learning how to make your bed like a minimalist, it is important to keep this in mind.

Only decorate with the materials you use rather than adding a bunch of stuff that is just for looks.

This simple and hygienic way to make your bed will save you time, effort, and money while still making sure that you sleep comfortably every night.

Try it out yourself and see what you think!
