Mental health is a complicated thing. There are so many aspects of your life that play into your emotions and moods. Sometimes, your body needs more health practices. Other times your spiritual life needs a boost. And if nothing else works, medical assistance is necessary.

On some simpler occasions, though, pampering yourself can be the most effective route.

Whether you’re looking at the prospect of recovering from depression, dealing with some self-esteem issues, or are just feeling off in some way that you can’t quite put your finger on, never underestimate the power of self-care and, in particular, pampering yourself so that you feel and look your best.

Here, we’re going to look at a few ways you show yourself some love and why it’s genuinely effective when it comes to your mental health.

1. Try some retail therapy

I’m not often one to suggest buying things to make you feel better but I do believe that when done responsibly, buying a little something extra for yourself can be extremely effective in boosting your mood.

Going out and spending money on clothes you might not immediately need might seem a little frivolous, but there is something to be said for the act of getting out of the home, going for a walk, and getting into new spaces.

Finding clothes that flatter you and make you feel great can help to improve your self-esteem.

A little change in your appearance can also help you get a sense of better control over your life, which can be good for rescuing yourself from a mood spiral.

Personally, my retail therapy usually involves buying something cozy. When I’m feeling upset, I desire comfort more than anything else. Instead of hiding under my covers every morning, though, I buy an outfit that makes me feel cozy even when I’m away from my warm bed.

Retail therapy doesn’t require a large amount of money. Small items can be just as effective as pricey ones.

2. Get snippin’

It’s not just refreshing the wardrobe that can give you a better sense of self-confidence. Taking care of our hair is the same as taking care of ourselves.

When we take the time and effort to care for ourselves, we affirm that we are, indeed, worth caring for.

And who doesn’t feel absolutely amazing after a good haircut?

If you’re feeling a little anxious about going out and spending a long time in public spaces, you can even have the self-care come to your home with services like london-mobile-hairdresser.co.uk.

Enjoy a glitzy new look and the sensation of refreshing your self-image from the comfort of your own home.

3. Try a hands-on approach

Stress builds up in the body as much as it does in the mind.

If you feel like you have trouble getting comfortable or you can feel the tension in your shoulders and back, then it might be time for a good massage.

Take a look at services like kiyoraspa.co.uk that can provide the hands-on therapy that you need, as well as indulge you with aromatic oils and a relaxing setting for the most easy-going experience you’re likely to have for some time.

Spa visits can be truly rejuvenating for the body and soul.

Here are some of my favourite types of massage and body care that might be worth a try:

  • Hot stone therapy
  • Chiropractor
  • Deep tissue massage
  • Fascial stretch therapy
  • Chinese cupping therapy
  • Acupuncture

4. Enjoy a night in a hotel

Usually, we only experience hotels as a necessary and oftentimes inconvenient expense when we need to be somewhere.

However, if you look a little closer to home, it might be easier to afford a nicer place where you can stay and rest, and enjoy the indulgences that the hotel has to offer.

Getting out of your usual habitat, enjoying being taken care of by someone else, and simply splurging a little on yourself can help to shake you out of a rut. A staycation can be a great way to see a different part of the city, too.

My partner and I used to book hotels as a break from our non-air-conditioned home in the summer. It was always such a nice way to feel like we had traveled far and spoiled ourselves when, in reality, we just drove to the other side of town.

It always amazed me how much more rejuvenated we felt after simply taking a break from cooking and cleaning for a day or two.

The next time you’re feeling a little down, it’s definitely worth it to try a small pampering routine. You can choose how you want to do it. Maybe you want a nice DIY, budget pamper or you’re feeling a little more inclined to make a big event of it.

Either way, it really could be the thing you need in order to boost your mood.

Of course, a massage and a haircut aren’t always going to be enough. Sometimes, you need to seriously consider talking to someone. But self-care has been shown to be effective at improving mental health in many instances and it is a great first step to helping yourself feel better.
