When I was a child and just learning to make my own lunches, I used to struggle with the tomatoes. 

Every time I’d attempt to cut the tomato into slices, I’d end up with a big, juicy mess. It was so frustrating that I just stopped using tomatoes in my lunches and turned to more easy-to-cut vegetables. 

When my mom realized the struggle I was having, she told me there was a simple solution to my problem. 

I was simply using the wrong tool. 

I had been using a thick knife with a dull edge to cut the delicate veggie when I should have been using a serrated paring knife.

Weighted blankets are an incredible way to calm your body when it’s time to sleep.

Natural light alarms can be another great way to guide your body’s circadian rhythm.

Best Amazon finds that help you nourish your body

Another good thing to do when you’re learning how to start a healthy lifestyle is to set reminders to put good things in your body.

You can remind yourself of this by stocking your fridge and pantry with nourishing food but you can also have an easier time maintaining a healthy lifestyle by purchasing some simple supplements that are harder to get in your food.

The products that I’m sharing are all of the things that I like to use on a daily basis to get some of the nutrients that I don’t think I can get through my food.

A water bottle you love

Before getting into any supplements, I need to start by advocating for a decent water bottle.

Water is an absolutely crucial thing that your body needs daily but many people struggle to drink enough of it.

A water bottle won’t instantly solve that problem but it will at least help remind you regularly to drink more water. 

My favourite bottle size is 24 ounces because it’s lightweight but easy to track. Once I’ve had three bottles, I know I’ve had enough water for the day.

Omega-3 pills

Omega-3 is oh, so good for your brain health and can help with a slew of other health problems.

Personally, the biggest benefit I find to this supplement is that my brain feels less foggy and my mood feels more stable when I take it.

If I go three days without an Omega-3 pill, I can almost guarantee I will have a mental breakdown on that third day. 

Personally, I struggle to get enough omega-3 fatty acids from my whole foods because I’m allergic to nuts and can’t easily get my hands on a lot of fish, so a supplement is the best solution for my lifestyle.

Vitamin D Supplements

Vitamin D is another supplement that is so good for you but, depending on where you live, it can be really hard to get enough of what you need through natural means.

The main way to get Vitamin D is by spending time in the sun but, as a Canadian, there are many months in the year where your skin barely touches the sun’s rays.

During those months, I turn to a supplement that I can put in my morning coffee.

Hygiene is an important part of physical self-care and there are some really simple ways that you can make your personal hygiene practice that much more effective.

If you’re looking for simple changes to help you start a healthy lifestyle, this is a great place to begin!

Some of the products I’ll be mentioning take extra time for you to use. Other products are just an upgrade that takes what you already do to the next level.

They are products that simply make what you are already doing more effective. 

Tongue Scraper

Oral hygiene is so important for your overall health. But even still, a lot of us miss a crucial area when we’re brushing our teeth- the tongue.

Bacteria, dead cells, leftover food debris, and toxins all hang out on your tongue. If you don’t clean it, you might reverse the good you did by brushing your teeth.

Additionally, just scrubbing your tongue with your toothbrush isn’t going to cut it.

A tongue scraper takes no more than ten seconds and makes a massive difference in your overall oral health.

While we’re on the topic of oral care, I have to mention the electric toothbrush.

I used to think that the toothbrush I used didn’t matter much. But I have definitely noticed the difference after swapping to an electric brush.

It really does do a better job of cleaning my teeth and again, it is a product swap that takes no extra time or effort from me, which is a big plus.

Coconut Oil or Sesame Oil

These two oils are commonly used for oil pulling to improve your oral hygiene. They are also useful for a myriad of skin ailments.

Neti Pot

The phrase ‘neti’ comes from the term ‘jala-neti’.

This refers to the Ayurvedic practise of cleansing the nose with water.

In Western terms, you may have heard this practice referred to as a ‘saline rinse’. It is commonly known to benefit anyone with sinus difficulties. 

I don’t use this every day but I like to practice jala-neti weekly when the weather starts to get colder.

I find it helps to keep my sinuses clear and prevent issues like sinus infections and colds.

Face Steamer

This product is great for all types of skin and health needs. However, it’s especially beneficial for people who struggle with asthma or people who live in dry climates.

Using a face steamer once a week (no more than that) can help to cleanse and hydrate your skin. It can also promote the circulation of your blood.

For those with asthma, it can make a really big difference in helping you to breathe easier every day.

Rosehip Oil

This oil was a recent purchase for me and I am loving it so much!

Of all of the natural oils, this is the best one for absorption.

If you’re wanting intense moisture added to your skin, this is your best bet. 

Keep in mind, because this oil absorbs quickly it is not the ideal oil for self-massage. I would recommend coconut oil for that job.

Best Amazon finds that help heal sore muscles and joints

A great deal of physical self-care involves moving and working your muscles so that you can have a full range of motion within each area of your body.

Free activities like stretching, walking and self-massage are a great place to start.

But if you want to make that time even more effective, there are some other products that can help you. 

A yoga mat

Honestly, this doesn’t need to be anything fancy or expensive. But a yoga mat is a great product that reminds you to add some movement into each day.

Plus, it helps prevent any slips when stretching.

A foam roller

This product was a recent addition to my own physical self-care routine and it has been a game-changer!

It’s a great product for people who have sore spots on their bodies that they can’t reach.

A foot massager

Okay, I know I’m using a fancy term for it but I’m actually recommending a simple tennis ball.

I’ve found tennis balls to be the handiest foot massager out there- besides massaging my feet with my own hands.

A neck massager

My neck and shoulders are the tightest areas of my body. As a result, I’ve tried a lot of different things to try to reach that area.

I ended up settling on an electronic neck massager because I personally think it does the best job.

This is a tool that can help you deeply massage any of those hard-to-reach areas on your body.

It’s much like the foam roller but can give you a deeper massage in more specific areas.

Orthotics

Having good orthotics can help keep your entire body aligned properly throughout the day.

For this reason, it is one that I would highly recommend.

I love my orthotics and rarely go without them! 

Unfortunately, I don’t have any specific recommendations for you since I got mine made by an orthopedic doctor. However, if you look around you’ll likely find something good!

A well-built backpack

For those of you who use a backpack often, this is another product that matters a lot for your body’s alignment and health.

Find a backpack that offers good support and stays as close to your back as possible.

A great deal of shoulder, neck and back pain can come from choosing an inefficient backpack.

A heating pad

Nothing beats a good ‘ol heating pad when it comes to treating tired muscles.

I like to use mine for about twenty minutes at the end of each day. It helps to relax some of my more tense muscles and it works like magic!

It’s such a basic tool but extremely worth it to own.

Best Amazon finds that help combat the modern lifestyle

As jobs have moved away from labour and gravitated toward desk work, our daily routines have grown to include less and less healthy activity.

This, in turn, has created quite a few health problems that we now have to work to reverse. 

The physical self-care tools that I’m including here are all things that help to combat the damage that our computer desks and modern inventions can do. 

Resistance Bands and Straps

This is a simple tool that is a great strengthener for many areas of the body.

It’s something small enough that you could take to the office and use on occasion in order to work muscles that get ignored throughout the day.

An ergonomic chair

When you are sitting in one place all day, it is important that the chair you sit in is going to help you, not hurt you.

Each person will do better with different designs. The main areas of importance are that you are not naturally hunching forward while sitting at the chair and that you have ample lumbar support.

I love my blue-light filter glasses!

It’s not something I use every single day but when I feel like the screen is hurting my eyes, these glasses make such a difference.

I also like to use them at night so that my eyes have a chance to get sleepy even if I’m using a screen past sundown.

Oil diffusers with essential oils

Oil diffusers are great for improving your mood and focus at work and can even help with things like breathing difficulties, digestion problems, and muscle tension.

It’s a great thing to add to your daily life that takes no extra time to manage.

The verdict is still out on the actual benefits of a salt lamp but it is said to cleanse, deodorize, and purify the air, among other health benefits.

Between that and the fact that they look really cool, I’ve got no reason not to try them.

A toilet stool

I get crazy looks when I say this but I much prefer the Eastern squatting toilets over our Western porcelain thrones.

Going to the bathroom just feels so much easier when your body is in a squatting position- and for good reason. 

Squatting creates a much clearer pathway for your bowels and gives the job of emptying your bowels to gravity so you don’t have to strain your muscles as much as when you’re sitting. 

But since the toilet itself can’t really be altered in our modern bathrooms, a toilet stool is the next best thing.

It mimics a squatting toilet so that you can receive the benefits of squatting on a modern toilet. 

Right now I’m just using any old stool but I eventually hope to purchase this awesome product that even comes with a foot massager attached.
