Here in Canada, we have long, cold winters.

The ground is barren, the animals are all quietly hiding away with the food they stored up over the summertime. Every sound is muted by snow and the cold breeze encourages everything and everyone to stay tucked away in comfort until it passes.

And just when you think you can’t take any more of the cold, Spring comes along, bright and joyful, bringing with it a glimpse of sunlight and warmth once again.

In Spring, the animals come out of their hiding places. You see them shedding their extra fat and fur, thinning out in preparation for the coming heat. The piles of snow slowly melt away and new life sprouts from the ground. The world around you is bursting with new life and you can even feel yourself starting to wake up from the long winter.

Our body mimics nature in the spring, melting away any of the stuff you don’t need and becoming more lively each day.

Does it not make sense to make a change in our morning routines as our needs and the nature around us changes?

When Spring comes around, we no longer need the warm comforts of a winter morning routine. This is the season to bring in new life, making it the best season for a motivational and inspiring morning routine for success!

I’m going to share with you how you can make small adjustments to your morning routine to align yourself with the season of Spring.

Instead of making you feel cozy and warm, this morning routine is designed to make you feel inspired, motivated and energized for your day. Try some of the suggestions or all of them for a fresh morning routine this season!

Morning Routine Tip #1: Wake Up Earlier

In nature, the sun starts rising earlier in the Spring and it stays up longer at night. Follow the sun’s example and make a change in your own rising and setting times.

Winter is a time in the year to get more rest, but when Spring comes along, you can cut back on a little bit of that time.

This is obviously different for everyone but play around with how much sleep you feel you need. If you feel good with only 6 or 7 hours of sleep even though you needed 8 or 9 hours in the winter, that’s totally fine!

Your body’s needs change as the seasons change. Experiment with what feels good for you. You will likely find that you want less sleep in the Spring than you do in the winter.

Morning Routine Tip #2: Make a Cleansing Drink

Outside, you will find snow melting away or rain coming down and washing all of the dirt and grime and stagnant water away from the earth.

We can mimic this season of cleansing by taking actions that cleanse our own bodies.

One way you can do this is by starting your day with a cleansing morning drink. Warm water does a great job of cleansing your body of any toxins, but you can also dress up your drink with different fruits and spices. Just try to stay away from coffee right away in the morning and save it for later.

Morning Routine Tip #3: Do an activity for mental clarity

Because you’re aiming to set up a morning routine for success and not for comfort, it is worth it to set aside some time in the morning to clear your head and get yourself in a good mental space for the day.

Do a Devotional or a Bible Study

Taking time to center your heart and your mind on God is a great way to start your day. You can choose how much time you need, but make sure you spend enough time that you feel rejuvenated and ready for the day ahead.

Do a Meditation

Meditation is a great way to set yourself up for success daily. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy; a simple quiet moment sitting on the couch will suffice. Find what works for you!

Practice Breathing Exercises

If meditation is uncomfortable for you but you still want to do something that is calm and quiet, breathing exercises might be a good fit for you. They help give you something to focus on so that you don’t get distracted. Additionally, certain breathing styles can even help you have more energy or calm you down

Write Morning Pages or Journal Your Thoughts

If you are someone who often feels overwhelmed by the number of thoughts and feelings swimming through your head, then journaling is a great way to combat your distractions. Use morning pages and journaling to free up space in your mind and get you motivated for the day.

Set Intentions for the Day

Depending on what works for you, this may mean writing down some inspirational phrases to motivate you throughout the day. It could simply mean write down a to-do list for that day. It’s your choice!

Morning Routine Tip #4: Intensify Your Workouts

You might notice that the animals outside start to look a little thinner as Summer approaches.

Our bodies are similar to that of animals. They are primed to shed some weight during the longer Spring days.

Not only is the weather perfect for more comfortable exercise conditions, but even our eating habits naturally change.

In cold weather, your body encourages you to eat more food and store up more body fat to keep warm, but as the weather heats up, your body no longer needs that.

Take advantage of the motivation and renewal that this season brings and use it as a chance to kick your exercise and healthy-eating goals up a notch. You will find that it actually feels quite natural to you!

Additionally, get outside for your workouts if you can. This is a great time to enjoy the cool weather and bright sunlight that has been gone for so long.

Morning Routine Tip #5: Add Detoxifying Practices to Your Shower Routine

Just as nature outside is cleansing itself of snow and dirt and leftover fall leaves, this is a good season for you to focus on cleansing your body inside and outside.

Instead of reaching for the oils and hot water, aim to put more focus on dry brushing or exfoliating. Since Spring is still a dry season, it also doesn’t hurt to do a quick oil massage.

One good practice to do all year round is tongue scraping. Use a tongue scraper to clean off your tongue every morning before you eat.

Finally, Spring is allergy season for you, then you should consider adding a nasal cleanse to your routine. Using a neti pot, you will pour some warm water down one nostril and the water will flow out the other nostril, clearing your nasal passage thoroughly. It feels really weird, but it’s great for people who tend to suffer from stuffed noses and sore throats this season.

Morning Routine Tip #6: Eat a Lighter Breakfast

Winter is a hearty season that encourages you to eat oily, heavy foods in order to combat the cold. But as everything warms up, it’s time to lighten the load on your food.

Cut back on oil and add more spices to help your body digest your food more easily.

Eat a smaller meal than you would in the winter and make sure you’re listening to what your body wants. If you’re not hungry at all, then don’t force yourself to eat. If you have an appetite, then eat what you feel you need.

Oatmeal is a good breakfast option all year round, but you can also opt for steamed veggies, beans, and eggs during this season.

Morning Routine Tip #7:  Dress for Success

The rest of your morning routine for success simply involves you getting ready for your day. There are not many changes needed here, but you might make considerations for your clothing.

Try to have your outfits mimic nature by dressing in bright colours that resemble the flowers sprouting outside. Think vibrant and colourful! As the weather gets hot, you can shift to cooling blues, greens, purples, and whites to complement the season.

Making adjustments to your routines as the seasons change will make your life a lot easier because you will be working with your body’s natural urges. Hello fellow Canadian! 🙂 I absolutely love this list of creating a morning routine, especially as we emerge from the winter months. I have been trying to drink a glass of water before my morning coffee but a cleansing drink would be even better! I also like the idea of an activity to promote mental clarity. What a great way to start the day. Happy Spring to you!

Love your name —- Genesis. These are great tips for a morning routine (I find it idealistic simply because it’s crowded here in our home haha but I’ll try to do some of these. I bet it will be life-changing. Thank you so much for sharing!

Thanks! And yes, it’s absolutely an idealistic morning routine. I like to come up with what I think would be the perfect routine and then just take bits and pieces from it to improve my current morning routine. I can promise you that my morning routine does not always look like this, but it would be my ideal. But hey, life definitely gets in the way! Hopefully, you will get something out of this that upgrades your morning routine in a manageable way! 🙂

Great post! I think having a morning routine definitely helps with better overall mental health and your day running smoother. I have seriously never heard of a tongue scraper, but it makes sense! I may have to snag one on Amazon.

Great advice as always, Genesis! I really struggle with getting up earlier, but now that the days are warming up, I’ll give it another go. And…so glad you mentioned dry brushing! I have one somewhere. Had completely forgotten about it, so I must find it because it is wonderful and a great way to help shed our winter skin (so to speak).

Thank you, Linda! Haha, ‘shedding our winter skin’ is exactly how I like to imagine it! There is something so therapeutic about the idea of melting away some of the unwanted things our body has stored up over the course of the winter 😉

These are all phenomenal tips – none of which I have put in practice recently. I realize I should work on my morning routine, but it’s the most challenging part of my day, because it’s when my chronic illness is the worst. I’m great at my evening routine though haha! But I’d like to better the mornings, so I appreciate your insight!

    • Genesis Sampson

I’m sure that can be a huge challenge, Stephanie! That’s so good that you make the effort to have an awesome evening routine, knowing that your mornings tend to be more difficult. You definitely don’t have to do ALL of the tips, as that might do more damage than good, but choosing one or two that could make your morning a little more pleasant is a good way to go about it! I hope it helps!

Mornings are definitely my favourite time of day, too, especially if I’m up before everyone else in the house wakes up. I love that moment of peace to get myself ready for the day ahead!

I love how this morning routine really takes inspiration from nature and the changing of the seasons. Where I live, we have long, cold winters too and I pretty much just hibernate. I definitely notice the change in me when spring arrives, and I love the idea of changing up my routine intentionally based on that.

    • Genesis Sampson

That’s really cool that you feel the same way! I definitely feel my body asking for change when the season starts to make changes. Like you, I basically hibernate in the winter. Everything is about being cozy and comfortable. Spring is always a time to get moving again, both mentally and physically!

Fellow Canadian here! So many great ideas you have. I need to get better with setting intentions for the day (on a personal level) – and actually setting time aside for those intentions. I have definitely been waking up earlier and getting outside. Listening to the birds and going for a walk with my pup is my fave thing to do first thing 🙂

    Reply
    • Genesis Sampson

Yes, a walk in the morning is so nice in the Spring! I feel like I am so much more eager to get outside whenever spring rolls around because it is just so nice to finally hear the birds again! Taking a walk first thing in the morning is a great way to start off the day!
